"special agent"

{made by mikah}

This week I had the privilege of making a few cookies to honor the life and spirit of a dear man and member of our family. This would definitely not be an easy task. How to represent the life of a great man in just a few symbols, which I could then make into cookies? Yikes!! I decided to do the FBI badge not just as a reminder of his lifelong career in the agency, but also to reference the highest standards of character that he held. Although not an exact duplicate of an authentic FBI badge, I tried to design something with an equal level of formality, authority, and of course, patriotism. And thus, my own cookie version was born.

The actual "FBI" lettering is done as an icing transfer, which means that it was first drawn and iced on a piece of wax paper. Once dried, you carefully peel it off the wax paper and glue it onto your cookie with a dab of icing. Although delicate, icing transfers are a great way to add dimension to your creation and yet another trick in your bag. I've seen bakers use them on just about every dessert you can imagine. I've even seen 3-D boxes and architectural models built from them!

The red and gold stars represent our "Lone Star" state of Texas. He really loved Texas and all the things that are quintessentially Texan - cowboy boots and big gas-guzzling pickup trucks . Both of which he proudly owned. Texas was not just the place where he and his wife lived for many years, but where they had decided to return to upon his retirement. To embellish the star cookies, I added a bit of shadowing and dimension with tiny nonpareils (red) and some extra lines of icing (yellow).

So I show you these with a heavy heart, but mostly overflowing admiration for the person who inspired them. Thanks as always for letting me share while remembering the life of a very "special agent" indeed.
