Ombre – The Cool Color Fade
I try to limit my attachments to trends and fads in design. However, when it comes to ombre; I just can’t help myself. I’ve practically turned it into a verb in our house. To my upholsterer: “Can’t we just ombre all the cushions?” Whether in textiles, ceramics, furniture, even painted wall treatments; ombre is a technique that I can’t get enough of.
So this week it seemed only too logical to try it on some cookies. The actual strategy was simple. I decided to use graduated squares, but you could use literally ANY shape: circles, triangles, flowers, anything. I colored the fondant in all the various shades of blue that I needed. Next, I cut them out & pieced it all together on the cookie top.
Voila! You have a really cool, ombre cookie design. You could apply this technique to a number of desserts. I’ve seen ombre on cakes & cupcakes (w/ buttercream icing). I’ve also seen the idea used with stacked jello, ice cream, or pudding desserts. Now that we can custom color almost every food on the planet, the possibilities are endless. So tell me, do you ombre?
