back to school cookies!

{made by mika}

School is just on the horizon, and the chalkboards are being cleaned and readied for another year.  In honor of that, I did a very traditional chalkboard cookie with fondant accents and some “chalky” lettering.  I think they came out great and can’t wait to give these to my daughter’s new teachers.

         The black chalkboard and brown frame were flooded with royal icing.  The fondant apples, ledge and tiny piece of chalk were then cut and shaped.  Then all were left to dry overnight.  The apples were done with a small circle cutter (*found in the clay aisle of the craft store), and shaped by hand with a few indentations and curves similar to an apple.

The next day using a stencil of “ABC”, I painted the letters on the black icing.  Using a small paintbrush dabbed lightly in a mixture of white color dust & vanilla extract, I painted on the lettering.  The end result was a powdered effect that actually looked as if it were written in chalk!

*Tip:  If you’re having trouble finding small, shaped cutters to use on your fondant, check the clay/sculpting aisle of your local craft store.  I was amazed at all of the cutters, embossers, and even molds that I found there!
Check out CookieCraft on Facebook for more tips and photos of cookies and fondant accents.

And many thanks to Oh Goodie! Designs for letting me share my creations every week on her blog….
